Christian Sands Trio at The Vermont Jazz Center, February 11

Date: February 11, 2017

Time: 8:00 pm

Christian Sands epitomizes the phrase “rising star.” Mentored by Dr. Billy Taylor, influenced by Barry Harris, Hank Jones and Oscar Peterson. He was then later pushed by Christian McBride, Steve Wilson and Bobby Sanabria, Sands is now everyone’s go-to pianist in New York where he can be found performing and recording with Alicia Olatuja, Ben Williams, Stefon Harris, Warren Wolf, Jaleel Shaw, the Mack Avenue Super Band, Etienne Charles and many others. He is comfortable playing old-school stride piano like Fats Waller, stretching out in a post-bop setting like McCoy Tyner or re-arranging a hip hop anthem by Drake. His big break was being asked to play with Christian McBride’s group at the Jazz Standard without a rehearsal. Several years later, Sands effortlessly navigates the piano chair in McBride’s trio – his accompaniment (and burning solo) on the up-tempo tune, Cherokee from Live at the Vanguard, was a crucial part of the package that earned McBride a 2016 Grammy for “Best Improvised Jazz Solo.” Sands is now riding the wave of his vast accomplishments after having been signed by Mack Avenue Jazz and focusing more on his own trio and quartet performances. He will appear at the Vermont Jazz Center with his working trio.
